Well, the Champions League can be a funny old competition, can't it? Out of nowhere, United have a 3-0 lead over the Azerbaijani minnows and are coasting to an opening win. It all started in the 27th minute when the hosts broke at pace, and Cunha cleverly turned in Dorgu's cross. Mickels missed a gilt-edged opportunity to bring Sabah level, and United made them pay with a quickfire double at the end of the half. Fernandes first brilliantly slotted home after wonderful work from Tielemans and Dorgu. Then, Sesko rounded the goalkeeper to pass the ball home, with Mbeumo doing brilliantly to slide him in. All of a sudden, it's turned into a very comfortable evening for Carrick's men, who are in cruise control here.

United's opponents have a fascinating story. Sabah were only formed nine years ago, but were crowned champions in Azerbaijan last season. They booked their spot in the league phase with a dramatic play-off triumph over Hapoel Beer-Sheva, Tellur Mutallimov scoring in the 94th minute of the second leg to force extra time, before they went on to win 6-4 on aggregate. They are just the second side from Azerbaijan to reach the competition proper, with Qarabag doing so twice in 2017-18 and 2025-26. Sabah boss Valdas Dambrauskas will be the first-ever Lithuanian to manage in the Champions League – he has lost five of his seven major European games (W1, D1) during spells with Ludogorets and Omonia Nicosia. The last Lithuanian player to feature in the Champions League was Deividas Semberas in December 2011 for CSKA Moscow. Domestically, they have won three from three in the Azerbaijan Premier League this season.
