The only problem in the second half is that the more risk Valencia take going forward, the more space there is for Yamal, Gordon and Fermin to deliver the killer blow.

If there is one thing that Corberan and Valencia can be pleased about from that first half, it is that they are only two goals down. Yamal opened the scoring after six minutes, lobbing a beautiful outside of the foot effort over Dimitrievski from the right angle, following Fermin’s curling, clipped pass into the box. Yamal thought he had his second almost immediately after the restart when Fermin had all the time in the world to turn on the penalty spot and tee his winger up. Yamal tucked it away, only for a lengthy VAR check to conclude he was a matter of centimetres offside. But Barcelona weren’t to be deterred, camping themselves firmly on the edge of the Valencia box and probing away constantly to find the many gaps that were opening. Fermin got his fourth of the season to double the lead in the 22nd minute, following good work from Yamal and then Gordon, who laid it back for Fermin to stroke a firm effort into the far bottom corner. A fourth Barcelona assist in as many games for Gordon, who combines telepathically with Yamal at times. Eric Garcia was forced off for Kounde just before the half hour mark following a collision with Rodri, before Fermin then hit the post in the 40th minute with a mazy, jinking run into the penalty area and a low effort forcing Dimitrievski to palm it onto the base of the woodwork. A truly dominant display from the visitors, although there have been occasional cracks in the armour, especially when Danjuma and Guerra are played in down the channels, forcing Cubarsi and Martin to cover wide areas.

Garcia then claims the resulting corner well and sets Barca on the front foot. He is just three games into his Barcelona career but so far in this half has completed 51 of his 53 passes, completing 100% of his final third passes too. Barcelona hit the post through Fermin but the move starts with Rodri's elegance, turning away from a challenge deep inside his own half and clipping a 40 yard pass into Pedri in midfield. The ball is moved onto Fermin who twists and turns his way past two challenges inside the box and hits a low effort across goal that Dimitrievski gets a good hand to, taking the sting out of the strike and it rolls onto the base of the far post and Valencia just about clear. Wonderful football.

Well well well. Yamal thinks he has his second almost instantly after the first, and it’s Fermin who is the provider once more. It’s all too easy for the Blaugrana though as Fermin has a good couple of yards of space around him in the middle of the penalty area to turn and slip the ball out to Yamal on the right side of the area. The winger is unmarked, and tucks the ball powerfully inside the near post. Most of the Mestalla seem condemned to the outcome for a couple of minutes but eventually, following a lengthy VAR check, the goal is ruled out for a marginal offside against Yamal. That was awful defending from Valencia though.

After leading Barcelona to an emphatic 29th La Liga title in May, their second in a row under Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana are purring once more in the opening exchanges of the 2026-27 season. 12 goals scored and just two conceded across three dominant victories over Elche, Athletic Club and Rayo Vallecano has laid the perfect foundations for a second title defence in as many seasons. After scoring 13 goals last campaign, Raphina leads the way in La Liga with five while summer signing from Newcastle, Anthony Gordon, has already endeared himself to the Camp Nou faithful with his tireless work rate, to go along with three assists. For Valencia, life under Carlos Corberan has been distinctly more average, responding to a ninth-placed finish last season with two losses and a draw in their opening three games. An opening day goalless draw to Celta Vigo has been followed by defeats to Real Betis and Deportivo a Coruna. They have scored just once in that time, through Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq. To add to that, Valencia have lost four of their last six league home games against Barca, though they did win the last encounter 3-1 in May, thanks to goals from Javi Guerra, Luis Rioja and Guido Rodriguez.
