Well, you would think that Schalke had just won an eighth German league title, the way the full time whistle was celebrated inside the VELTINS-Arena. Instead, it was one of the most remarkable rearguard actions the league has ever seen. For ninety minutes Muslic’s side, back in the top flight after three seasons away, chased, blocked, battled and fought their way to a first point of the season, against the often unstoppable German champions. Schalke weren’t without threat, fashioning opportunities for Gosens and El-Faouzi and presenting danger on almost ever counter-attack in the second half. But the final 30 minutes saw Bayern camped not just in the Schalke half, but on top of the Schalke box. 2.10 xG created, 15 shots, five on target. No goals to show for it. Schalke, just 0.21 xG and a single shot on target, but a memorable point to announce themselves back at the top level of German football. Diaz will rue two glaring missed opportunities, while Katic, Becker and Kurucay will celebrate the countless moments of defensive brilliance inside the box. Karius though, in the Schalke goal, was the crucial final line of defence, capping his display with a wonderful fingertip save from Kane’s 87th minute strike which was destined for the top corner. The German held onto everything Bayern threw his way with composure. Bayern host Bodo Glimt in the Champions League on Thursday, before travelling to Elversberg on Sunday to try and return to winning ways. Despite having 80% of possession and 68 final third entries, the German champions have not made their dominance known. In fact, as the half wore on, sloppy errors and basic mistakes actually encouraged Schalke into the game, giving the home crowd something to get behind. As the noise inside the VELTINS-Arena gradually rose, the game became frantic, with Upamecano living dangerously against the willing runs of Sylla. Karius made a good early save from Brown, in what was the only real sight of goal for either before the 40th minute, but as Schalke began to find joy on the counter attack, El-Faouzi made an excellent run into the box and forced Upamecano into action to prevent an almost-certain goal. Diaz then had Bayern’s best chance a minute later, breaking into the penalty area but scuffing his finish a yard or two wide of Karius’ post. Schalke ended the half in the ascendency and will feel they are well in with a chance of earning a point or better in this second half. But with Olise, Kane and Musiala waiting in the wings, Bayern have aces up their sleeve.

The referee waves it away, but a minute later, Upamecano makes another error with a misplaced pass, allowing Ebimbe to attack the penalty area on the right side. He is met by Davies who gets his body across and the Cameroonian hits the floor, but once again the referee says no. The complexion of this game has completely changed in the last 10 minutes. The home side fancy it.

They have withstood significant pressure and just in the last five minutes have begun to assert themselves a little more in the battle and get the fans off their seats. Kompany cuts a frustrated figure on the touchline as the stadium gets louder by the minute.

After three years away from the Bundesliga, Schalke are back in the big time, with all 62,000 inside the VELTINS-Arena behind them. Despite an opening day defeat, 3-0 away at Augsburg, Miron Muslic’s reborn Schalke were applauded by their travelling support and are projected to sell out every week at home. They have not faced Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga since May 2023, losing 6-0 at the Allianz Arena, and today could prove to be an equally stern test, with Vincent Kompany’s German champions already looking in imperious form in their 5-1 opening day victory against Stuttgart. Michael Olise and Luis Diaz were both on the scoresheet, while the third member of their sensational trio, Harry Kane drew a rare blank. Despite starting on the bench he will be on the hunt to put that right once he enters the field, as he currently sits on 98 Bundesliga goals in just 95 games. Should he do so, he would become the fastest ever to reach a century, overtaking Dieter Muller (129 games). Die Konigsblauen have not beaten Bayern at home since 2010 (!) and given the visitors’ 26-game unbeaten streak on the road, Opta’s win probability of 75% is fair, possibly even generous to Schalke. But today is not so much about the result for Schalke and former Plymouth Argyle boss, Muslic, but about re-establishing themselves in the German top flight, a division the club won seven times in the pre-Bundesliga era.
